How do these scammers operate? Whether they are male or female themselves, they assume the identity of a Russian female and set up dating profiles in leading dating services. They find a suitably attractive photo online and use it as their profile photo. Then they contact large numbers of unsuspecting men with a persuasive message in the hope and expectation that many will respond. They then string them along, pretending to have a relationship with them and earning the men's trust and loyalty.

Once they have this loyalty they come up with an excuse for needing money (such as to travel to meet the man concerned). Once the man has paid over the money he will never hear from the Russian 'woman' again.

How can you protect yourself? Proceed with extreme caution, being ready for the signs that women who contact you are actually not genuine. You might wish to try a different type of dating. Whatever you do you should never hand over any funds, no matter how persuasive the other person is.
